Go to market strategy for small business: where to play and how to win

A go to market strategy is your plan for which buyers you will sell to, through which channels, with what offer and message. For a small business it comes down to two decisions. Where to play: the one segment where your offer is strongest and buyers are easy to reach. How to win: the reason those buyers should choose you, backed by a price, a proof point and a clear next step. Get both right in one segment, track what turns into revenue, and only then add the next segment or channel.

Where to play

List the segments you could sell to and score each one on three things: how much a customer is worth over a year, how easy they are to reach, and how often you already win when you meet them. Start with the segment that scores high on all three and where your team already speaks the buyer's language. That is rarely the biggest one.

How to win

  • One sentence that says who you help, with what, and why you over the alternatives.
  • A price or starting price the buyer can see before they talk to you.
  • One proof point per segment: an outcome, a process or a guarantee they can check.
  • A first offer that is easy to say yes to, such as an audit, a trial or a fixed scope project.

Inbound and outbound together

Inbound brings people who are already looking: search, AI answers, ads and referrals. Outbound reaches the right people before they start looking: email, LinkedIn, calls and events. A small business usually needs both from the start, aimed at the same segment with the same message, so each channel makes the other work harder.

The first 90 days

  1. Weeks 1 to 2: pick the segment, write the positioning line, set the first offer and price.
  2. Weeks 3 to 6: build the landing page, tracking and a short list of target accounts; launch one inbound and one outbound channel.
  3. Weeks 7 to 12: review which messages and channels produced real conversations, cut what did not, and double what did.

Signs you are spreading too thin

Your website tries to speak to everyone. Every campaign has a different message. You cannot say which channel produced last month's best customer. When those show up, go back to one segment and rebuild from there.

Questions

What is the difference between a go to market strategy and a marketing plan?

How long does it take to build a go to market strategy?

A focused strategy for one segment can be set in two to four weeks. The first real results usually show within 90 days of launch.

Can you help us build one?
